What is the labyrinth, really?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The labyrinth is a part of the inner ear that plays a key role in maintaining balance and accurate motion perception. It consists of two main parts: the cochlea, responsible for hearing, and the vestibular system, which controls balance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When this part of the inner ear becomes inflamed, the condition is called labyrinthitis. Causes of labyrinthitis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Labyrinthitis most often occurs as a result of a viral infection. Viruses that cause the flu or the common cold can spread to the inner ear and lead to inflammation<\/em>. In rare cases, the cause may be a bacterial infection, especially if there was a prior middle ear infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from infections, inflammation can also be triggered by an autoimmune response, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of the inner ear.
